Hemorrhoid Symptoms

There is a lot of misunderstanding about hemorrhoid symptoms, a lot of people talk about it in general terms, mixing symptoms, causes, and treatments. Most of them don't even know there are two kinds, internal and external hemorrhoids.

Few people (except those who have or used to have them) know what do hemorrhoids look like.

As much as 80% of US population will sometime in their life feel at least one of hemorrhoid symptoms.

More often in men then in woman, also more common in Caucasian population, the problem can develop at any age, even in babies and toddlers, but incidence increases after the age of 30.

Large percentage of women develops hemorrhoids during pregnancy, but problem usually goes away after childbirth.

So What Do Hemorrhoids Look Like?

They look like a grape like protrusion, purple, blue and red in color.

Coloration is similar to both prolapsed internal and external hemorrhoids. The difference is that, you can pretty much feel external hemorrhoids right from the start, if not painful from the beginning, they will certainly cause you some anal itching and burning sensation. Also you can just take a hand mirror and look what's happening down there.

With internal hemorrhoids it is more difficult to feel them and recognize them as problem right from the start. In this case you must rely more on the sensation, look for any discomfort during or after the bowel movement. Prolapse happens in the 2. stage of the sickness and it will be much harder to treat it if you allow it to come to that.

Also see picture of hemorrhoids below, as a saying goes "a picture is worth a thousand words", this one really is.

In most cases they are not a dangerous or life threatening condition, and in early stage signs may disappear in a few days, however if you had them even once, most likely the hemorrhoid symptoms will return to pester you again.

Hemorrhoid symptoms can be diagnosed in several ways, first being a digital rectal exam (gloved finger), second is an anoscopy (short-lighted scope), if diagnosis is not clear by these two exams your doctor will probably perform colonoscopy and check the entire colon for any possible problem. It is very important to have your condition diagnosed by a doctor, it will save you a lot of pain, aggravation, time and money spent on treatments.

Do not diagnose condition by yourself or untrained professional!

If caught on time, this problem can be treated with over the counter medications, home treatments, and changing a diet.

Signs for internal hemorrhoids are quite different from those in external ones. That difference is caused by their different “locations”.
